the films in the classroom series

The African Diaspora Film Festival’s Films in the Classroom Series is a monthly film and dialogue program presented from February through April at Teachers College, Columbia University. Designed to connect cinema, culture, history, and education, the series uses films as a starting point for meaningful conversations around the experiences and contributions of communities across the African Diaspora.

Each month features a distinct theme that evolves from year to year, while February consistently commemorates Black History Month and March highlights Women’s History Month. In 2026, the series expanded its thematic scope in April with Trans Cultural Dialogues, exploring identities, experiences, and cultural expression through film and facilitated discussion. Bringing together educators, students, filmmakers, scholars, and community members, the series creates a space for critical reflection and cross-cultural exchange within the academic environment of Teachers College, Columbia University.
